Run Report ....

Delaneys Creek, Queensland, 23 April 2006 ....

The run was planned as a 0830 arrival for a 0900 departure from the Shell Service Centre, Nudgee. It seems like there were a few worried faces as at 0945 I had not arrived. As one reassuring member said to me later at Nudgee, 'If Lance said he will be here, he will be here!'

It was a rather full-on week for me with a trip to Warwick on the Thursday to meet-up with Greg, Lexa and Bob from the NSW Torana Club which meant I didn’t get home until pm hours Friday. Then there was the setting-up of the venue as well as picking-up food etc and general horsing about. On the day of the run we (Greg, Lexa, myself and Rick (son)) got away a from home a tad later than expected for reasons I cannot recall, plus we needed fuel as well as an arranged meet-up at BP South at Morayfield with Graham and Julie from Bribie Island. Even Graham was worried as I didn’t make it by the arranged time. Graham phoned my home just to see if things were ok. Anyway, I was well on my way to BP South by the time Graham had rung.

After introductions and a pre-run brief, the group got away from Nudgee pretty-well on time. The run to Samford and onto Dayboro was uneventful and everybody seemed to manage to stay together as a group for most of the way. Those who fell behind, mostly due to traffic lights, caught-up as the front-enders were stopped by lights.

The group arrived at Dayboro at about 0950 where we stopped for a comfort break and refreshments as well as meeting-up with members of the Redcliffe Branch of the Ulysses Club who were to join us for the rest of the day. Also waiting for us at Dayboro were Justin and Sharon in their super-charged LJ. And catching-up with us at Dayboro were Michael and Noela in their red 350 LX hatch.

At 1030, and with the Redcliffe Ulysses members in front, we departed Dayboro for our next stop at the Mt Mee Lookout. This section of the run was not as fast as I had hoped but a good run just the same. Along this section, a couple of daredevil Ducati riders were dead serious in trying to initiate more training for local paramedics as well as having their pictures plastered across the front page of the next days’ Courier Mail as statistics by overtaking us on double lines and in a most dangerous fashion. Where are the police when you need them most .... probably out booking Torana drivers!

The stop-over at Mt Mee was short, but it gave everyone the opportunity of viewing, through the haze, the Glasshouse Mountains as well as the coastal region of the Sunshine Coast and Bribie Island.

The run down to Delaney Creek took about 10 minutes and with everybody parked, people started to settle-in to a leisure afternoon of relaxation and milling-about the cars and motorcycles.

The day started to draw to a close at around 1530 as some headed for home. But what is a departure without a little tyre squeal, rubber smoke and engine noise? Delaney Creek was not spared from this as a few of the lads let-go with a little horsepower on the way out.

I’d like to thank those who attended the event, particularly NSW Torana Club members Greg and Lexa from Umina, Bob from Hoxton Park, and, in addition, Robert, Veronica and family from Wingham (near Taree) for making the long haul to Queensland.

A special thanks to Trevor and Angela Isherwood (Ulysses) for the help they gave in the advance preparation of food as well as arriving at the venue early to assist with the set-up and vehicle parking.

Total attendance: a staggering 98 plus three dogs!

Total vehicles: 17 Toranas, 9 Motorcycles, Trike and 12 Non-Torana/Motorcycles.
